Dynamo: Magician CGI

My weal name is Steven Fwayne.

"See this paper?... I shall now give it to my assistant, she will carry it all the way to our CGI department, and they will totally miraculously turn it into a spaceship.

That's what being a magician is all about."

"Watch these cards... With a mere flick of the wrist I will turn all these cards into beer-bottles. How do I do it? Years of hard work, dedication, practice, sweat, tears, perseverance, and talent.

And of course a little help from our hard-working editor in the CGI department."

"Watch this... A deck of cards in my left hand, and a deck of cards in my right hand... Now watch me switch hands... Voila. I STILL have a deck in each hand. No need to applaud, it's one of my slightly less spectacular tricks. I do this entirely without CGI!"

"I am standing completely still, and yet these butterflies - none of which are paid actors - are all flying around me, singing the British national anthem in Chinese."

Auditions for "Dynamo: Magician Impossible". Hundreds of unemployed actors are slightly less unemployed thanks to the show.

Here's the guy doing all the work. "Steven gets all the glory. Our viewers are morons."

Ever wondered how fat people would fare in a "Dual Survival" type of show?

Perhaps you want to find out about people who are even dumber than those innocents who actually fall for "Dynamo's" bullshit show? You do? Well then, read this:

Album Of The Year: 1977-2015

Best Albums: 1977-2016

Cult Of Luna & Julie Christmas  Mariner

Most likely the album of the decade so far. Majestic on so many levels. Ignore the emo-screams (they don't happen too often), and you too can immensely enjoy this dynamic, emotive, genius metal album.

2. Transcendence - DEVIN TOWNSEND
3. Triangle - SCHAMMASCH

VOLA  Inmazes

2. In Times - ENSLAVED
3. The Plague Within - PARADISE LOST

Devin Townsend   Sky Blue

Disk 1 from the double album "Z2". A terrific collection of catchy pop metal.

2. IV - One With the Storm - GHOST BRIGADE

Shade Empire  Omega Arcane

A very weak year. This is perhaps not a classic album, but it is the best from that year by far, and contains some excellent music. The highlight is the phenomenal title track instrumental. Other notable songs are 4 to 7, and track 1 is solid. A rare case of symphonic metal resulting in good music rather than clownish, cheesy drivel.

Killing Joke MMXII

It never ceases to amaze me how a bunch of guys pushing 50 manage to produce excellent, fresh-sounding music even after over 30 years in the business. These oldie bands nearly always stink, because in 99% of the cases they remain in the music business purely for the money. Not the case with this band. You simply can't create such passionate tunes by thinking of dollar signs.

Best Tracks: On All Hallows Eve, In Cythera, Colony Collapse, Pole Shift.

2. Epicloud - DEVIN TOWNSEND

Ladytron Gravity The Seducer
It's extremely rare for me to place a pop album on the top of any "best album" heap, as they are notoriously inconsistent and usually full of fillers, with maybe one or two good songs (and those are the best pop albums!). Furthermore, I had thought this band was all washed up, and expected perhaps one good track on this album, if that. But they totally surprised me with their perhaps best album to date. There are very few weak tracks, you can enjoy almost the entire album. Hard to pick out stand-out tracks, coz the good ones are all on a roughly equal footing. Helen Marnie, the lead singer, has possibly the most pleasant female singing voice I've ever heard. Her slight speech impediment only adds to the unique quality of her singing.

Best Tracks: White Elephant, Ace Of Hz, Ritual (instrumental), 90 Degrees, Mirage.

2. Es Werde Nicht - KNORKATOR
3. The Sleeping Gods EP - ENSLAVED

Enslaved Axioma Ethica Odini
As so often, this band places the best songs in the 2nd half, but the first half is far from average. This progressive metal album flows, no need to skip tracks.

Best Tracks: Singular, Night Sight, Lightening.

2. Absolute Dissent - KILLING JOKE

Devin Townsend Addicted
Frcrissakes, don't judge this album by its dull cover. One of the most complete masterpieces, hence why it is impossible to choose any highlights. Nearly all the songs are on the same very high level of quality.

Best Tracks: all tracks except Ih-Ah

2. Isolation Songs - GHOST BRIGADE

Enslaved Vertrebrae

Not as good as most albums on this list, but 2008 was a very weak year in music. The first half of the album is nothing exceptional, whereas the second half is where all the good and great stuff is.

Best Tracks: Reflection, New Dawn, Center, The Watcher.

Devin Townsend Ziltoid the Omniscient

This silly "space-opera" musical is highly entertaining and full of excellent melodies, very dynamic, adventurous and playful, and leaves all other albums behind it in a rather weak 2007.

Best Tracks: Solar Winds, Hyperdrive, The Greys.

2. Das nächste Album aller Zeiten - KNORKATOR
3. Anonymous - TOMAHAWK

Killing Joke Hosannas From the Basements of Hell

Some songs here are quite average, there is even a terrible track, but when this band gets it right there is almost no better.

Best Tracks: This Tribal Antidote, Majestic, Judas Goat, Gratitude.

2. Now, Diabolical - SATYRICON
4. Synchestra - DEVIN TOWNSEND

Strapping Young Lad Alien
As strong as this album is, it's only their third-best. City is their masterpiece, and the rather extreme Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing is not far behind. A sonic assault on the senses, quite unpredictable and diverse for an extreme metal album.

Best Tracks: Skeksis, Imperial, Shitstorm, Two Weeks.

For detailed info on all of Devin Townsend's music:

2. Witching Hour - LADYTRON
3. General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners - MIKE PATTON
4. Those Once Loyal - BOLT THROWER

Enslaved Isa

Best Tracks: Bounded by Allegiance, Violet Dawning, Return to Yggdrasil, Secrets of the Flesh (instrumental), Neogenesis.

2. Houses of the Mole - MINISTRY

Devin Townsend Accelerated Evolution

If you ignore the two mediocre pop songs (Traveler & Slow Me Down) which were included for whatever strange reason and do not fit with the rest of the music, the rest is some of the finest music written in the past decade. Definitely not for musically-challenged peasants. Beautiful progressive metal for fans of originality and passionate melodies.

Best Tracks: Deadhead, Depth Charge, Storm, Suicide, Sunday Afternoon.

2. Killing Joke - KILLING JOKE
3. Animositysomina - MINISTRY

The Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton Irony Is A Dead Scene

This is an EP, with three original songs, and one Aphex Twin cover. Ignore the cover and enjoy the first three "songs", all of which are fookin' brilliant. Extreme metal for people with very strong nerves, highly original also.

Fantômas The Director's Cut
A collection of tracks/songs from various film soundtracks, often much-improved, sometimes almost unrecognizable. A unique album.

Best Tracks: The Omen (Ave Satani), Charade, Vendetta, The Godfather.

3. Imaginary Sonicscape - SIGH
4. Tomahawk - TOMAHAWK

Devin Townsend Physicist
Fans of Devin Townsend mostly dislike this album, for whatever silly reasons. Perhaps they just needed to find an album that they can moan about because up until the mediocre "Ki" Townsend never gave them that opportunity.

Best Tracks: Namaste, Victim, Planet Rain.

Mr. Bungle California
Bungle's most commercially accessible record starts off with nothing much, just as the predecessor, while tracks 2 to 6 build the strong main core of the album. Not as good as the first two albums, but still brimming with originality and memorable tunes.

Best Tracks: None Of Them Knew They Were Robots, Retrovertigo, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, Ars Moriendi.

2. Title of Record - FILTER
3. The Fragile - NINE INCH NAILS
4. Dark Side of the Spoon - MINISTRY

Devin Townsend Infinity
Ignore the awful cover which might lead you to believe this is a collection of chewing-gum pop tunes. It's progressive metal of the highest order. This album contains some of the most amazing riffs and vocal parts your MTV-ravaged ears will ever get to hear.

Best Tracks: Truth, Christeen, Life is all Dynamics, Soul Driven Cadillac.

2. Speed Ballads - REPUBLICA
3. Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws: Hurqalya - SECRET CHIEFS 3

Devin Townsend Ocean Machine: Biomech
Townsend's first "solo" album is also his best, although many of the following releases were almost as good. This is a milestone not just in progressive metal, but music in general. This kind of music has no effect on musically-illiterate peasants (other than to confuse and annoy them) so if you listen to rap or Bon Jovi, or you consider Opeth the pinnacle of experimentation, it's best you avoid this altogether. One of those albums that people swear "changed their lives", and I fully understand them.

Best Tracks: Life, Voices in the Fan, Regulator, Bastard.

3. Nemesis - GRIP INC
4. Homogenic - BJORK
5. A Deeper Kind Of Slumber - TIAMAT
6. Decibels - RAZOR

7. Baile de los Locos - VOODOO GLOW SKULLS
8. Cryptic Writings - MEGADETH
9. The Final Chapter - HYPOCRISY
10. The More Things Change - MACHINE HEAD

Killing Joke Democracy

Only a dozen or so albums have had as strong an impact on me as this one. Most KJ fans do not consider this a great album, but it is possibly their best one. It also set the tone for the style they would play on the following several albums. If you want goose-bump music brimming with originality and vigour, here it is, unfiltered and unfake.

Best Tracks: Savage Freedom, Democracy, Absent Friends, Aeon.

2. Filth Pig - MINISTRY
3. Rude Awakening - PRONG
4. Republica - REPUBLICA
5. Beat the Bastards - THE EXPLOITED
6. Lost My Brain Once Again - CYCO MIKO
7. Feel Sorry for the Fanatic - MORGOTH

Mr. Bungle Disco Volante
Ignore the first track - which is awful - but proceed straight to the rest, which is some of the most original and unpredictable music you'll ever get to have fun with.

Best Tracks: Carry Stress in the Jaw, Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz, The Bends, Desert Search For Techno Allah, Chemical Marriage.

2. Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing - STRAPPING YOUNG LAD
3. Songs of Sanctuary - ADIEMUS
4. Jagged Little Pill - ALANIS MORISSETTE
5. Post - BJORK
6. Ragnarok - GWAR
7. Alice In Chains - ALICE IN CHAINS
8. Draconian Times - PARADISE LOST
9. King For A Day - FAITH NO MORE
11. Power of Inner Strength - GRIP INC

Killing Joke Pandemonium
Their most metal-sounding album, it has only two weaker tracks. Some of its parts were recorded in the Egyptian pyramids.

Best Tracks: Millennium, Communion, Pandemonium, Pleasures of the Flesh.

2. The Downward Spiral - NINE INCH NAILS
3. 4 - DANZIG
4. Cleansing - PRONG
5. Superunknown - SOUNDGARDEN
6. Youthanasia - MEGADETH
7. Wildhoney - TIAMAT
8. Point Blank - NAILBOMB
9. State of the World Address - BIOHAZARD
10. Ill Communication - BEASTIE BOYS
11. Korn - KORN
12. Riddles Are Abound Tonight - SAUSAGE
13. Stranger Than Fiction - BAD RELIGION

Voodoo Glow Skulls Who Is, This Is?

Fun, energetic, playful ska-core, the best of its kind.

Best Tracks: Sin Berguensa, La Migra, Insubordination, Dirty Rats, Revenge of the Nerds.

2. The Outer Limits - VOIVOD
3. Bloody Kisses - TYPE O NEGATIVE
4. Debut - BJORK
5. Emergency on Planet Earth - JAMIROQUAI
6. Porno for Pyros - PORNO FOR PYROS

7. Give a Monkey a Brain - FISHBONE
9. In Utero - NIRVANA
10. Individual Thought Patterns - DEATH
11. Independent - SACRED REICH

12. Ten Summoner's Tales - STING

Faith No More Angel Dust

The band's best album. Only one weak song.

Best Tracks: Land of Sunshine, Caffeine, Midlife Crisis, Everything's Ruined, Malpractice, Be Aggressive.

5. Clouds - TIAMAT
6. The Ritual - TESTAMENT
7. The End Complete - OBITUARY
8. Return of the Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns - LAWNMOWER DETH
9. The Art of Rebellion - SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
10. Countdown to Extinction - MEGADETH
11. Cuatro - FLOTSAM & JESTAM
12. Shades of God - PARADISE LOST
13. Definition - D.R.I.

Mr. Bungle

Along with Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine, this is THE album of the 90s, and one of the most important music releases in the past 50 years. Buying this in September of 1991 caused a revolution in my brain. Suddenly, all other music became dull by comparison.

Best Tracks: all of them

2. Prove You Wrong - PRONG
3. III: Alpha Omega - CRO-MAGS
4. Angel Rat - VOIVOD

5. Mind Funk - MIND FUNK
6. Slow, Deep and Hard - TYPE O NEGATIVE
7. Badmotorfinger - SOUNDGARDEN
10. Sailing the Seas of Cheese - PRIMUS
11. Testimony of the Ancients - PESTILENCE
12. Nevermind - NIRVANA
13. In This Life - MORDRED
14. War Master - BOLT THROWER
15. No More Tears - OZZY OSBOURNE
16. Arise - SEPULTURA

Jane's Addiction Ritual de lo Habitual

With this album the pinnacle of alternative/psychedelic metal had been reached, never to be reached by any band since, including themselves on their subsequent releases. 6 songs are sublime, the other 3 average.

Best Tracks: Stop!, No-One's Leaving, Then She Did, Three Days, Ain't No Right, Obvious.

2. Facelift - ALICE IN CHAINS
3. Frizzle Fry - PRIMUS
4. Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions - KILLING JOKE
5. Rust in Peace - MEGADETH
6. Lights Camera Revolution - SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
7. Beg to Differ - PRONG
8. Oppressing the Masses - VIOLENCE

12. Cause of Death - OBITUARY
14. Here Comes Trouble - SCATTERBRAIN
15. The American Way - SACRED REICH
16. Persistence of Time - ANTHRAX
17. Grinning Like an Undertaker - THE ACCUSED
18. Never, Neverland - ANNIHILATOR

Faith No More The Real Thing

The album that catapulted Mike Patton into stardom and into the music world which badly needed someone like him.

Best Tracks: Surprise! You're Dead!, Zombie Eaters, The Real Thing, Falling to Pieces.

2. The Joke's on You - EXCEL
3. Consuming Impulse - PESTILENCE
4. Nothingface - VOIVOD
5. Annihilation of Civilization - EVILDEAD

8. Slowly We Rot - OBITUARY
9. Extreme Aggression - KREATOR
10. The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste - MINISTRY
11. Best Wishes - CRO-MAGS

12. No Control - BAD RELIGION

Violence Eternal Nightmare

A thrash classic, brilliant and energetic from start to finish, i.e. no fillers at all. Underrated and overlooked by many when it came out.

Best Tracks: Calling In the Coroner, Eternal Nightmare.

For a detailed list of the best thrash albums:

13. No Rest for the Wicked - FLOTSAM & JETSAM
14. South of Heaven - SLAYER
15. Frolic Through the Park - DEATH ANGEL
16. Violent Restitution - RAZOR

Voivod Killing Technology
The most unique 80s metal band with a decidedly progressive shtick, and this is their best album - although keep in mind that it's one of many great albums they recorded. There are no weak or average tracks here whatsoever, all of them are highest-level psychedelic thrash. I am not including the two bonus tracks Cockroaches and Too Scared Too Scream, which were not in the original release and which are not as good as the other seven tracks. This legendary Franco-Canadian band redefined originality, often copied but never rivaled. This album has a vibrancy that will thrill any serious music fan - provided he can tolerate abrasive and bombastic metal.

Best Tracks: Tornado, Killing Technology.

2. Split Image - EXCEL
3. Abstract Reality EP - NASTY SAVAGE
4. Scream Bloody Gore - DEATH
5. Retaliation - CARNIVORE

23. Ticket to Mayhem - WHIPLASH
24. Release From Agony - DESTRUCTION
26. Maximum Security - TONY MACALPINE
27. You Got It - GANG GREEN

Metallica Master of Puppets

This is what Metallica sounded like before James started changing diapers and before Lars decided to follow around Manchester's Oasis like a love-torn groupie moron. Before Metallica sold out to the lure of the corporate buck and lost their youthful elan, they were the best metal band around.
The unique guitar sound on this epic album has never been duplicated, nor did they ever manage again to make another album close to as good as this one.

Best Tracks: Battery, Damage Inc., Disposable Heroes, Orion (instrumental).

2. Life of Dreams - CRUMBSUCKERS
3. Eternal Devastation - DESTRUCTION
4. Immaculate Deception - LUDICHRIST
5. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - MEGADETH
6. Reign in Blood - SLAYER
7. Feed Us a Fetus - DAYGLO ABORTIONS
8. Midnight Madness and Beyond - G.B.H.

10. Beyond the Gates - POSSESSED
11. Rrröööaaarrr - VOIVOD

12. A Kind of Magic - QUEEN
13. The Age of Quarrel - CRO-MAGS
14. Somewhere in Time - IRON MAIDEN
15. Not of This Earth - JOE SATRIANI
16. Rendez-vous - JEAN-MICHEL JARRE

Exodus Bonded By Blood
Considered by many to be the best thrash album of all time, and they may be right. There are no fillers here, fantastically written and played material all the way through. Tritonus metal at its nutty best. Avoid the re-recorded version though, released about 20 years later, it isn't nearly as brilliant. It was tough to make up my mind between this album and the 2nd ranked, which is possibly the best pop album of all time

Best Tracks: Bonded by Blood, And Then There Were None, Piranha, No Love.

2. Hounds of Love - KATE BUSH
3. Evil Invaders - RAZOR
4. Seven Churches - POSSESSED
5. Infernal Overkill - DESTRUCTION
6. Dealing With It! - D.R.I.
7. Speak English or Die - S.O.D.
8. Hell Awaits - SLAYER
9. Spreading the Disease - ANTHRAX
10. Songs From the Big Chair - TEARS FOR FEARS
11. We Care a Lot - FAITH NO MORE
12. Power From Hell - ONSLAUGHT
13. Brothers in Arms - DIRE STRAITS
14. The Dream of the Blue Turtles - STING
15. Power and Pain - WHIPLASH
16. Around the World in a Day - PRINCE

Van Halen 1984
That a band such as Van Halen would make an album as spiffing from start to finish as this one - who would have thought. But here it is, one of the greatest albums of the 80s, and possibly the best heavy metal album of all time. The album must have drained Eddie Van Halen of ALL of his creative juices because after this release the band hadn't recorded half of a decent song, just garbage.

Best Tracks: House of Pain, Hot For Teacher, Jump, Panama.

2. Ride the Lightning - METALLICA
3. War and Pain - VOIVOD
4. Powerslave - IRON MAIDEN
5. 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother) - EURYTHMICS
6. Purple Rain - PRINCE
7. The Works - QUEEN
9. Dawn Chorus - TOMITA

Metallica Kill 'Em All

Possibly the best thrash album ever recorded, it has no fillers whatsoever, and has one of the freshest-sounding, raw guitar sounds. This album is one of many proofs that young, enthusiastic kids - rather than jaded rich aging rock-stars - make the best music, especially when it comes to metal.

Best Tracks: Phantom Lord, Hit the Lights, Whiplash, Seek & Destroy.

2. Suicidal Tendencies - SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
3. Piece of Mind - IRON MAIDEN
4. Bark at the Moon - OZZY OSBOURNE
5. Let's Dance - DAVID BOWIE
6. Another Perfect Day - MOTORHEAD

Blade Runner OST

The best movie soundtrack of all times, Vangelis outdid himself on this one, and everything he composed before or after this pales in comparison.
There are two main versions of the soundtrack, make sure you get both - 1982 and 1994 versions - as they are quite different in parts, the second issue having different versions and also tracks that aren't featured on the original. But there are also several other versions.

Best Tracks: Memories of Green, Blade Runner Blues, Tears in Rain, Love Theme.

2. Mesopotamia - THE 52'S
3. The Golden Age of Wireless - THOMAS DOLBY

Ozzy Osbourne Diary of a Madman
If there ever was a perfect example of "don't judge a book by its cover" it's this album. Ozzy's name stands for "booze'n'drugs heavy metal clown", and the less said about some of the mega-cheesy CD covers (such as this one) the better. The music, however, is anything but standard cliche heavy metal; it is highly original at times, featuring outstanding guitar work and sublime vocals, and quite grand. Five excellent tracks build the core of the album, the other three are mediocre. One of the best 5 heavy metal albums ever recorded, easily.

Best Tracks: Over the Mountain, Flying High Again, You Can't Kill Rock and Roll, S.A.T.O., Diary of a Madman.

2. Ghost in the Machine - THE POLICE
3. Les chants magnétiques - JEAN-MICHEL JARRE
4. Denim and Leather - SAXON

Motörhead Ace of Spades

So wonderfully raw and energetic, stands the test of time with ease and will remain a metal classic for the ages. Not all songs are brilliant, but those that impress are sublime.

Best Tracks: The Hammer, Love Me Like a Reptile, Ace of Spades, JailBait.

2. Zenyattà Mondatta - THE POLICE
3. Super Trouper - ABBA
4. Never For Ever - KATE BUSH

ABBA Voulez-Vous

I refer to them as the best pop group of all time. Any sane music listener should agree.

There aren't many pop albums without fillers, and this is one of them. Nearly all of the songs are excellent. Don't be a snob and get this. Fucking hipsters completely ignore this band - but that should only endear this band even more and highly recommend their music to the true fans of music who focus on timeless tunes as opposed to image, the hipness factor, pseudo-intellectual malarkey and other bullshit that too many zombies out there focus in this moronic day and age of insecure nerds and rebel wannabes.

Best Tracks: Kisses of Fire, Voulez-Vous, If It Wasn't for the Night, Chiquitita, Angel Eyes, As Good as New.

2. Regatta de Blanc - THE POLICE
3. The Bermuda Triangle - TOMITA
4. Overkill - MOTORHEAD

The Police Outlandos d'Amour

I like to call them the best rock band of all time.

Best Tracks: So Lonely, Roxanne, Next to You.

2. Kosmos - TOMITA
3. Touchdown - BOB JAMES
4. Children of Sanchez - CHUCK MANGIONE

David Matthews Dune

A bit of fusion jazz, for a change. This album is totally obscure, a barely known gem waiting to be discovered by people who don't follow trends and aren't slaves to media hype. Of course, you DO need to have trained ears to appreciate this kind of music, so any music peasants that might be reading this, avoid this album like the plague because it will just aggravate you, reminding you how musically illiterate you are (and you know you hate to be reminded of that). The album has several vocal tracks as well, covers of well-known 70s hits, sung by a fantastic female singer whose name I don't even know.

Best Tracks: Space Oddity, Silent Running, Part I: Arrakis, Part III: Song of the Bene Gesserit.

2. The Album - ABBA
3. Nevermind the Bollocks - SEX PISTOLS
